Chris Arnold - Musical Director

Chris Arnold

Chris Arnold was appointed Musical Director of Toronto's MegaCity Chorus in August of 2005. An accomplished vocalist and director, he has earned the title of Ontario District Quartet Champion four times, on two different voice parts. He was also Associate Director with the Toronto Northern Lights, helping the renowned small chorus earn six International medals from 2000-2005.

Chris grew up to the sound of barbershop music, listening to his father's quartet rehearsals as a boy. His first opportunity to sing barbershop came at the age of 16, when he joined the Twin City Harmonizers in his home town of Kitchener, Ontario. There, Chris gained much of his early music leadership experience, as a bass section leader, assistant director and eventually front line director.

Chris has earned an Honours Bachelor of Music degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, where he specialized in voice and education. While there, he studied choral conducting under Noel Edison, founder and Artistic Director of the Elora Festival Singers and current conductor of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Education degree from Althouse Faculty of Education in London, Ontario.

Throughout his post-secondary education, Chris maintained active involvement in his barbershop and vocal jazz ensembles, as well as doing solo and choral work in his church. Most notably, Chris was a founding member of Minor Infraction, an a cappella jazz combo that represented WLU in MusicFest Canada in Vancouver, as well as the CBC TV special "Campus On Stage".

Chris is well respected as a quartet singer, having won four District Championships. In his first three quartets (Discovery, Contagious and intrigue) he sang baritone. Chris then switched to bass in his most recent quartet, The Fixx, who were the 2004 Ontario District Champions. He has also represented the Ontario District in the International Quartet contest six times

In 1997 Chris was instrumental in founding the Toronto Northern Lights chorus. As Associate Director, he helped the group become the smallest chorus (since the Society's formative years) to win an International medal, earning a fifth-place bronze medal in Kansas City in 2000 with only 34 men on stage. The chorus went on to win five consecutive silver medals, earning a reputation for daring and innovative presentations, before Chris assumed the leadership of the MegaCity Chorus.

In 1998, Chris parlayed his wide vocal range and sight-reading skills into Quick Start Vocal Productions, a company that specializes in producing learning recordings for barbershop ensembles. His recordings have been commissioned by some of the top groups in barbershop, across the USA, Canada, and Europe. Chris is also a highly sought after coach, and is a current Music Judge.

None of Chris' accomplishments would be possible if it were not for the love and support of his lovely bride Juanita, and their two children Brianne and Brent.
